Oesophageal Cancer: My Story

Oesophageal Cancer: My Story

I remember it like it was yesterday. I had been feeling unwell for awhile and finally decided to get checked out. The doctor ran some tests and a few days later he called me in for the results. I had oesophageal cancer and my world fell apart.

My initial emotions were disbelief and deep sadness. I couldn’t believe this was happening to me and I felt very alone. My doctor explained that I would need an operation to remove the tumour and I was so scared.

I had to go into hospital and it was a frightening experience. The surgery went well and the doctors were pleased, but the recovery process was slow and difficult. I was so relieved once I was out of hospital, but I still had to go back for regular check-ups and tests.

The cancer journey is a long one and I’ve had my ups and downs. It’s been a roller coaster, but I’m feeling much more positive about the future. I’m grateful for my doctors who have been so supportive throughout my treatment, as well as my family and friends who have been so understanding.

I’m in good health now and have learned to appreciate life and every moment I have. I’m so thankful that I have overcome this life changing experience and I’m determined to stay strong.
