C. Difficile: My Story

Back pain, nausea, and diarrhea had become my reality. I thought I was just coming down with a stomach bug, but my doctor informed me that I had contracted Clostridium difficile (C. difficile).

The antibiotics prescribed to me caused the infection, so it was a double-edged sword. I was frustrated and angry about the circumstance, but I understood the need for the drugs that led to it.

The pain and discomfort were unbearable, and it felt like it would never end. I had to make changes to my lifestyle, as I was constantly so fatigued and rundown. I also found myself unable to leave the house at times, out of fear that I wouldn’t be able to make it to a restroom in time.

My doctor kept me well informed throughout the process, and I was even referred to a specialist for better management. With their help, I was eventually able to improve and manage the symptoms.

Though I still struggle at times, I have learned to accept and live with C. difficile, and the changes that come with it. I’m much more aware of my diet and lifestyle choices, and I’m now able to cope with the condition in a healthy and productive way.
